With the UK local elections just days away. I have restarted my #CanvassingQuestions series to find out some more about the local St Albans District Conservative Candidates. This post covers an interview with Mary Maynard, the candidate for Harpenden East:
Why do you want to be a councillor ?
Working as a management consultant for over 25 years, I was used to shaping approaches to understand client needs and creatively designing ways to deliver solutions they could use. When I retired, I realised my skills and experience could be used to help and improve the community I have lived in Harpenden for over 30 years. Councillors are at the heart of the community. Their role is to understand residents’ needs and issues and to find ways to deliver common solutions that best meet these. It gives me the opportunity to do what I am best at, whilst putting something back into society.
What difference do you believe you can make?
As an individual, I can keep in close touch with my residents to make sure their views are heard, their problems solved and they have the opportunity to participate in the decision making process on any initiatives which impact their lives. As a member of the Conservative Team, we can shape policy in the District to really benefit the people of Harpenden East, whilst delivering cost effective services (with high satisfaction ratings) and keeping community charges down.
What are your top three favourite things about St Albans?
- Our open spaces at Harpenden Common, Batford Springs and Rothamsted Park.
- Our vibrant High Street in Harpenden.
- Our strong community spirit, with its lively collection of charities, clubs and societies that everyone can enjoy.
Why should residents vote for you ?
I am a local person who is prepared to put time, energy and commitment into making sure Harpenden East remains a great place to live and who is passionate about working with Conservative colleagues to ensure future changes benefit our residents.
